Ele.me Boosts Its Leadership Position in O2O Commerce With Azul Zing

Key Highlights:

  • With the Azul Zing runtime for Java, Ele.me is able to simplify operational complexity, maintain high throughput at load and reduce the number of servers required to deal with 800+ orders per second
  • Zing simplifies the Ele.me architecture and reduces costs by decreasing the number of servers required and slashing the number of JVM instances needed
  • Zing removes Ele.me’s need to constantly adjust its systems when orders increase at peak times

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — Azul Systems (Azul), the award-winning leader in Java runtime solutions, today announced that Ele.me, the number one Internet-based food delivery service in China, is using the Azul Zing® Java Virtual Machine (JVM) to ensure stable, rapid performance at peak times without any need for adjustments or added resources. Ele.me, which is Mandarin for “Are you hungry now?”, is meeting the unprecedented appetite of Chinese consumers, while simultaneously taking the lead in the rising popularity of O2O (Online to Offline) commerce.

Ele.me processes over five million take-out transactions per day, making it the number one take-out app in China with 40% market share. Ele.me partners with thousands of restaurants in 1000 cities around China and has over 80 million users. Daily sales have been over 200 million Yuan ($30 million USD), with over 99% of the volume coming from mobile orders.

“As the leading food delivery platform in China, Ele.me experiences peak load periods during lunch and dinner time every day,” said Ele.me CTO, Xuefeng Zhang. “We have made tremendous investments in our hardware and software instances to ensure our Data Access Layer (DAL) efficiently and reliably provides high-performance services. With the Azul Zing JVM, we were able to reduce hardware use by 50% and decrease the number of Java instances by 75%. Our deployment has now moved from single-machine multi-process to single machine single-process, simplifying our deployment environment and effectively reducing operation and maintenance costs. Our measurements show Zing JVM runs smoothly and consistently even at high CPU load and with large memory. We are now even more confident our platform can handle the impact of peak traffic during promotional activities, helping us to remain number one in our highly competitive market.”

“Improving stability and throughput were the top priorities for Ele.me,” said Scott Sellers, Azul Systems president and CEO. “Zing has achieved these goals while also reducing Ele.me’s costs by simplifying their architecture, reducing the number of servers and removing the need to tune JVMs. Azul continues to invest heavily in engineering capabilities, and successes reported by customers like Ele.me affirm that Zing is and remains the top JVM for enterprise Java applications, particularly where performance and consistency are most crucial.”

Ele.me has more than 15,000 employees and has received over $2.3 billion of venture financing. Current investors include Alibaba, Ant Financial, CITIC Private Equity Funds Management, China Media Capital and Sequoia Capital.
