Inductive Automation Chooses Azul Systems Zulu Embedded for Ignition Industrial Application Platform

  • Inductive Automation has adopted Azul’s builds of OpenJDK for use across their entire product family
  • Customers of Inductive Automation will receive fully-integrated builds of Azul Zulu Embedded as part of all Ignition platform and Ignition Edge device deployments starting with Ignition version 7.9.10
  • Java 9 is embedded in the client launcher of Ignition 7.9.10, and Java 11 will be embedded in both the Ignition gateway and the client launcher for Ignition 8 when it is released in early 2019

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Azul Systems, the award-winning leader in Java runtime solutions, today announced that Inductive Automation has chosen Zulu Embedded builds of OpenJDK for their Ignition industrial application platform.

Ignition is a very flexible, widely adopted, standards-based industrial automation software platform that is used to build and deploy supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, manufacturing execution systems (MES), Industrial IoT (IIoT) deployments, human-machine interfaces (HMI), and other manufacturing and process-based applications.

Ignition is written in Java and uses the language across its gateway, client, and edge installations and in its extensive library of core and third-party software modules. Ignition takes advantage of multiple features that were added to the Java SE standard in Java 9 and Java 11.

“We wanted to provide Ignition users and developers with a fully supported, open-source Java development and runtime platform that is continuously up to date,” said Carl Gould, co-director of software engineering at Inductive Automation. “By adopting Zulu Embedded and teaming with Azul, we can ensure that our customers always have access to secure, certified, and tested builds of Java that have been fully integrated into our Ignition platform.”

“As embedded OEMs, ISVs, and IoT pioneers look to the future, they need a trusted Java partner who is dedicated to supporting the Java runtime for embedding and distribution,” said Scott Sellers, Azul Systems president and CEO. “By teaming with Azul, our embedded partners gain access to an experienced team 100% focused on Java, access to the full breadth of Java SE versions with long-term support, and flexible, hassle-free business terms.”
